But a delivery person is driving a package.

Thus the more nominal money the waiter gets from the percentage tip. The longer you sit there, the more the waiter takes care you and the more money you generally spend on the bill. To compare, when considering dining at a restaurant, there is somewhat of a direct proportion on the cost consumed and the time spent at the restaurant. To add on that, I especially don't understand why it should be a percentage of the order value. So I fail to understand why should a job description that (to me, at least) does not seem to have the "care element" or any personal touch in it should be expected to automatically receive tip? Just like in Uber Eats you pay the fixed delivery fee. (Not sure if that's regional, but not in Europe, and especially not in the city.) You just pay the postage. I mean, you don't tip the postman either.

So I am genuinely looking for some reasoning behind tipping the Uber Eats driver when what they do is picking up a package and driving it to your street number. And you definitely don't tip at the grocery store.

You just wait the line, say what you want, they hand it over and you pay the retail price. Somehow though I feel like people lately started to associate tipping with "food" by default. It's also, why you give bad (or no) tip to to somebody who is performing truly miserable or even unpleasant service. That is why you give a good tip to the waiter who is generally polite, gets you things correctly, proactively asks you what you need. So roughly speaking, it's for a service that can be performed mindlessly (or even rudely), but is rewarded to actually be performed in a great, efficient, pleasant, and/or even positive personal approach. You do the service right, you get average tip you do it amazingly, you tend to have a better tips you suck at it, it manifests in you getting poor tips. It's not a provocation.Īnd just to be clear from the beginning I honestly don't consider myself a cheap bastard in any way.īut let me explain why I'm asking, because the way I look at tipping is that it's a mechanism to appraise somebody for taking care of you or providing a service with a certain personal touch. Please, someone explain to me why should a driver be considered to get a tip? I'm asking in the most productive and positively curious way. The impulse for this was that my version of UberEats platform recently started to include default tipping option upon the order's creation - which immediately became an incredibly irritating feature.
